Milestone Achieved! First Wind Turbine Installation Completed for Hai Long 3 Offshore Wind Farm

Jointly developed by Mitsui & Co., Northland Power Inc, and Gentari International Renewables, the Hai Long Offshore Wind Project ("Hai Long Project") announced the successful offshore installation of the first wind turbine for the Hai Long 3 wind farms. This achievement signals construction is entering a critical phase and highlights local offshore wind industrial development.

The nacelle of the turbine installed was assembled locally at Siemens Gamesa’s nacelle assembly facility in Taichung. The offshore installation was carried out by CDWE, Taiwan’s leading large-scale offshore wind marine engineering contractor. This seamless integration of local assembly and offshore installation represents substantial progress in deep-rooting offshore wind technology within Taiwan.

Advancing Toward Full Grid Connection by Year-End: Key Construction Milestones

According to statistics from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Taiwan’s total offshore wind capacity now ranks fifth globally. The Hai Long Project, with a total capacity exceeding 1 GW, stands as one of the nation's most iconic flagship developments.

Reviewing the construction progress: the Hai Long 2A wind farm, featuring 21 turbines, was completed and grid-connected at the end of last year. Hai Long 2B also installed all 16 turbines last year. With today’s installation of the first turbine at Hai Long 3, the project has officially entered its crucial construction phase.

Beyond driving national renewable energy targets, the Hai Long Project is actively fulfilling its localization commitments. Regarding nacelles, building upon the mandatory requirements for Hai Long 2A, the project expanded its partnership with Siemens Gamesa to include Hai Long 2B and 3 wind farms in its local procurement. A total of 73 locally assembled nacelles completed assembly this month and are currently being transported offshore for installation.

Leveraging a massive order scale of over 1 GW, the Hai Long Project prompted Siemens Gamesa to expand its "Nacelle 2.0" facility in Taichung. Furthermore, the project has enabled nine local suppliers to pass Siemens Gamesa’s global supply chain certification, integrating Taiwan’s manufacturing capabilities into the broader Asia-Pacific wind power supply system and enhancing overall industrial competitiveness.

From Construction to Operations: Delivering Long-term Energy and Economic Benefits
"The successful installation of the first turbine at Hai Long 3 wind farm demonstrates the synergy between our project team and local contractors as we move steadily toward full grid connection," said Tim Kittelhake, CEO and Project Director of the Hai Long Project. " As a major flagship project, our deep collaboration with the local supply chain not only fulfills localization requirements but also elevates the technical and quality standards of Taiwanese suppliers, enabling them to compete in the international market."

Looking ahead, as the wind farms connect to the grid and transition into the long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) phase, the benefits of localization will continue to expand. From nacelle assembly during construction to O&M services post-commercial operation, the Hai Long Project remains dedicated to fostering Taiwan’s offshore wind industry chain and supporting the nation’s net-zero transformation goals.
