The "Taiwan National Clean Up" initiated by the non-profit organization Taiwan Adventure Outings was held on May 28 this year. There were 25 cleanup sites in total from the north to south of Taiwan. The Hai Long Offshore Wind Project called on its team members to participate in this event, and selected Rouzongjiao Beach, Xianxi Township, Changhua, joining the cleanup event of more than 2,000 volunteers across Taiwan to contribute to the preservation of Taiwan's natural environment.
Rouzongjiao Beach is located in Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, with beautiful wind turbines, vast sandy beaches, gorgeous sunsets, and most importantly, a rich and varied natural landscape. It is a hidden paradise and precious asset for the people of Changhua. However, due to the tides, ocean currents and human activities, the shoreline has gradually become taken over by debris, having a profound impact on the marine ecology.
The Hai Long Project has always been committed to the sustainable development of the environment, upholding the concept of coexistence and co-prosperity with the local community, and actively participating in various environmental protection campaigns. Moreover, with unwavering enthusiasm, Hai Long has quietly taken action related to ocean conservation in Changhua, participating in as well as hosting several beach cleanups in the area. As such, Hai Long has looked forward to restoring the coast to its originally beautiful self. Since the wind farm is located just off the coast of Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, the beach cleanup on the Rouzongjiao Beach planned by the Hai Long Project is particularly meaningful.
Although Taiwan is undergoing a severe COVID-19 outbreak, the Hai Long team is undeterred. With the firm adherence to the epidemic prevention regulations, Hai Long has called on its team members and their families to roll up their sleeves and clean up the marine waste. This is how Hai Long fulfills its corporate social responsibility and puts into practice the idea of environmental protection, whilst taking the opportunity to explore the beauty of Taiwan.
After a morning of hard work, the Hai Long Project removed a total of 438 kilograms of man-made waste of various types, including Styrofoam, plastic products, bottles and cans, cigarette butts, Tetra Pak Products, etc. The total accumulated waste created a staggering sight. After watching the coastline gradually became cleaner thanks to the concerted efforts of everyone, one of the team members said: "I am very happy to be able to do my part to protect Taiwan."
Felipe Montero, project director of Hai Long Offshore Wind Project, said: "The significance of the beach cleanup is to actually put into practice the concept of environmental protection and plant this seed deeply in everyone's mind. As a member of the local community in Taiwan, the Hai Long Project values ecological conservation and environmental sustainability, and through every beach cleanup, we expect every member to become a practitioner and activist of sustainability.”
