Hai Long Offshore Wind Project ("Hai Long") has selected Century Wind Power Co., Ltd. ("Century Wind Power") as the supplier to fabricate and supply three-legged jacket foundations to the Hai Long wind farm. These jacket foundations will be the largest ever for the offshore wind farms in Taiwan once finished. The two parties held the fabrication contract activation ceremony today, and plan to order steel plates before the end of this month and start production upon receiving the materials in April next year.
Hai Long Offshore Wind Project, with the awarded capacity of up to 1,044MW, is jointly developed by Northland Power Inc., Yushan Energy Pte. Ltd., and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., constituted of the Hai Long 2A (300MW), 2B (232MW) and 3 (512MW) wind farms, and located off the Changhua coast with the water depth of 35-55 meters. Century Wind Power will fabricate large jacket foundations that can carry 14MW wind turbines and are specifically tailored to the seabed environment of the Hai Long wind farm. The height of the foundations is about 94 meters, and each weighs up to 2,000 tons, which is equivalent to the sum of the weight of a thousand cars.
Felipe Montero, Project Director of Hai Long, said, "Because of the site conditions at Hai Long and the size of the WTGs we’ll use, the jackets for Hai Long will be among the biggest ever in offshore wind and a significant challenge to our suppliers. However, based on Century Wind Power’s track record of fabricating jacket foundations for previous projects in Taiwan and the impressive progress they’re showing, we’re very confident that the collaboration between the two parties will be successful. Today’s activation ceremony is an important milestone for the Hai Long project to fulfill the localization goal and demonstrates that the project is progressing on track.” As of today, Hai Long has completed and activated all the major contracts and is seeing steady construction progress of the wind farm, which will be connected to the grid and start feeding power in the first quarter of 2025. When it becomes operational, the Hai Long project will become the largest single wind farm ever in Taiwan, supplying electricity to more than one million households.
According to Century Wind Power, the company has completed 186 pin piles and 20 jacket foundations since it joined the offshore wind industry. Century Wind Power has broken through the bottleneck of the fabrication capacity of the jacket foundation with the gradual increase of manpower. As a result, the production capacity has been increased to 3-4 foundations per month since the fourth quarter, and the target monthly output will reach 4 or more foundations at the beginning of next year.
Wen-Hsiang Lai, Chairman of Century Wind Power and Century Iron and Steel, said, "It is a great honor to be recognized and selected as a partner by Hai Long for Century Wind Power’s capabilities, including the technical capabilities, business conditions, and quality management. With the support of the government's continuous promotion of localization, Century Wind Power managed to reduce the learning curve of jacket foundation fabrication and increase our production capacity this year. Major international developers have also acknowledged our production quality, and we are very confident that such an exceptional order will be delivered on schedule.” Century Wind Power and Century Iron and Steel are actively preparing the production capacity and supply chain for the zonal development round. At the same time, they have also received many international inquiries about the orders. They believe that under the government's policy that continues to promote industrial localization, Century Wind Power and Century Iron and Steel will be able to further establish a solid local supply chain and develop local talents for the future demand in the Asia-Pacific region to be ready for the vigorous development of the offshore wind industry and drive forward the upgrade and development of the local industry.
